Bres an Áilinn ( Bres the Beautiful) was the son of a Fomorian father and a Tuatha de Dannan mother. When Nuada Airgetlám lost his hand in battle Bres was made king in the hope that he may unite the two clans. Bres, however, treated the Tuatha de Dannan as slaves and showed no hospitality towards them. On leaving his house the Tuatha leaders complained that "their knives were never greased and their breaths did not smell of ale"
To rid the Kingdom of the biased treatment of Bres, the God of Healing Dian Cécht and the God of craftsmanship and silversmithing, Credne created a silver hand for Nuada which allowed him to resume his position as king.
