Cessair is a legendary figure from Irish mythology who is said to have been the first person to set foot in Ireland. According to the Lebor Gabála Érenn (Book of Invasions) she was the granddaughter of Noah, who, denied a place on the Ark, sailed to Ireland with fifty women and three men to escape the Flood. Amongst her companions were Bith, Fintan, Bóchra and Ladra. After arriving at Bantry Bay, disease and disaster struck leaving Fintan as the sole survivor. Cessair symbolizes themes of origin, exile and human resilience in our mythical prehistory.
