Manannán Mac Lir is a major deity in Irish mythology often seen as a guardian of the Otherworld and a guide for souls travelling between realms. He was a huge figure in the Tuatha de Dannan and is noted for his magical powers. He also has strong associations from Scotland through Wales and the Isle of Man which is named after him. His horse, Aonbharr, had the ability to ride equally well over land or sea which enabled him to travel with ease.
Manannán Mac Lir had a castle in Aghamore parish on the shores of Mannin Lake, which was also named in his honour and it is believed that he is buried in Aghamore, Co. Mayo.
