The Salmon of Knowledge is a tale from Irish mythology about wisdom and destiny. The poet Finegas spent years trying to catch a magical salmon that had eaten hazelnuts that had fallen into the Well of Wisdom from an overhanging tree, granting all knowledge to whoever ate it. When Finegas finally caught the fish he asked his young apprentice, Fionn, to cook it but not to eat any. During cooking a blister rose on the skin of the salmon and Fionn burst the blister with his thumb, burning his thumb in the process. Instinctively he sucked his thumb and gained all the wisdom. From then on whenever Fionn needed insight he would place his thumb in his mouth and draw on the salmon’s boundless knowledge.
